President Trump now has his sights set on something he has shown himself to be truly great at — buying, renovating, and improving golf courses throughout the golfing world. This one is a public golf course in D.C. called the East Potomac Golf Links, which he toured today.
“We will build one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World which, importantly, will also be made available to the Public,” Trump wrote on social media. “When completed, this Course will have the ability to host Major Golf Tournaments, including The U.S. Open, The Ryder Cup, The PGA Championship, and other top PGA Tour events.”
Naturally, even this project is rife with controversy. National Links Trust, a nonprofit that operates East Potomac, was told by Trump and the Department of the Interior that it would have to accept mounds of dirt from the construction of the Trump White House Ballroom. When it didn’t (or did, depending on who’s talking), Interior issued a default notice that the nonprofit had violated the dirt order. The trust then agreed to let the administration take over the golf course.
Trump said renovation will begin in September. East Potomac currently charges as little as $9 to play the course. Though Trump said the course will remain open to the public, he didn’t say what the links fee would be.
The D.C. Preservation League, however, has sued Interior to stop the project. No doubt, they’ll find a friendly Obama or Biden appointee to half the renovation.
