Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, aka AOC and Bartender Sandy, won’t deny a presidential run in 2028, but took to TV to announce she was freezing her eggs, presumably for either donation or personal use. She didn’t specify.
“There is very strangely a political risk, or a political tax, that comes with sharing this info,” she said of her freezing-eggs decision. She also elaborated in one of her videos:
“This is just not something that men deal with. Men run for office, or frankly they interview for jobs. And people don’t think in the back of their minds, OK, this guy’s running for office. How old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family?”
AOC, 36, made her announcement on the ABC News show “This Week.” Asked if he was going to run for president, she said that she hadn’t “ruled out the possibility.”
When pressed about policy proposals being floated by the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) candidates vying for national office in several states, she noted: “The idea that there’s a diversity of thought in America among everyday voting people is a fundamental fact of our country. I don’t think that we should be worried about what somebody somewhere believes.”
AOC is a member of her local DSA chapter, but doesn’t belong to the national wing. Where she started to sound like she was moderating her position came when asked about defunding the police. She said that that idea made sense during the COVID pandemic, but not now:
“The doors were really open in trying to entertain any and every policy that was going to get us to a better place. Of course, rhetoric in that time is not rhetoric that we would use today, and I’m grateful that these candidates have the opportunity to present who they are to their electorate and what they’re campaigning on in this moment.”
AOC is leading the Democrats’ presidential polling in New Hampshire, generally the first state to hold presidential primaries. Her party, however, is talking about moving the first primary to South Carolina, a more moderate electorate that saved Joe Biden’s ass in 2020 when he couldn’t win anywhere else.
So, is AOC becoming more moderate? Doubtful. More likely, she is just being more careful in her wording to appear more presidential without revealing her true position on major issues.
