Davos Flash: Trump Announces the ‘Framework’ for a Greenland Deal that Will Last a ‘Long Time’

Framework2

Was this President TACO at work once again? After a meeting with NATO Chief Mark Rutte, President Trump announced that they had “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland.” Stay tuned for specifics.

Asked by a reporter if this amounted to a U.S. purchase of the island nation and to explain the details of the deal, Trump stumbled for words and then said, “It’s a little bit complex, but we’ll explain it down the line.”

Trump also announced that his planned tariff war on EU opponents to his Greenland takeover was being canceled. He told CNBC’s Joe Kiernan that “we took that off because it looks like we have, pretty much the concept of a deal.”

The tariff about-face led to an immediate rally in U.S. stock markets that took back a good share of the losses suffered Monday after he announced punitive tariffs over Greenland opposition.

On Truth Social, Trump proclaimed the deal “a great one for the United States, and for all NATO Nations….Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress.”

The homeward-bound president’s social media message then assigned the fate of the deal to continuing negotiations by Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and “various others.”

“They will report directly to me,” he closed, cutting off further enquiries aimed directly at him. Trump also suggested that the deal involved U.S. access to rare earth elements on the island, which he called “mineral rights” in his CNBC interview.

Speculation on BBC News television conjectured that the “framework” may entail permanent bases on Greenland that will have the right of “sovereignty,” in the manner of United Kingdom military bases in Cyprus. There was no word whether Denmark, whose territorial rights extend to Greenland, had agreed to any of this.
