President Trump is now saying he will acquire Greenland “the easy way” or “the hard way.” Does anyone really believe he’d invade a NATO territory? Maybe his bravado will get Denmark to the negotiating table, or maybe not.
Meanwhile, the biggest challenge calling for American force, following the ouster of Maduro, is in Iran, where the people are desperately demonstrating for an end to the despotic rule they’ve endured since 1979. Trump has threatened military action there if the Ayatollah and his forces kill protestors, which they have already done by the dozens.
All this brings up the question of how effective Trump’s threats are. They didn’t work in Venezuela until an invasion and extraction showed they had teeth. His military strikes on ISIS in Nigeria were short-lived, however, as just this past week the group went on another murder-kidnapping rampage.
Note that in all these threats, nothing except embargoes and sanctions has ever been voiced against one Vladimir Putin, who continues to kill away in Ukraine. How about threatening to arm Ukraine to the teeth with Tomahawk missiles and other weaponry?
Will there be another midnight air raid, this time in Iran? Or ships pulling up on Greenland’s shores reminiscent of Vikings past?
As the old Asian curse goes: May you live in interesting times.
