As the nation celebrates its 249th anniversary — at least in Red States and Communities — it’s important to recall some of the passages of Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence that set the nation on its course to freedom and independence, to wit:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Note here that Jefferson changed “pursuit of Property” to “pursuit of Happiness.”

“That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,….”
Tell this to those ill-liberal judges who sought to block the “consent of the governed” when Donald Trump tried to implement the policies for which he was elected by “the governed….”
“That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
This passage, of course, served as a preface to the justification for throwing off British rule. Let’s hope that it never has to be invoked again should our own government become “destructive of these ends….”
