Wherefore Art Thou, Winston? Trump Needs to Take Off His Historical Blinders

As I have mentioned more than once, Donald Trump, should he continue on his current path, may go down as this century’s Neville Chamberlain. You know, that British Prime Minister who proclaimed that “we have peace in our time” after giving Adolph Hitler half of Czechoslovakia. World War II ensued in less than a year.

Let’s recap the mess in the Middle East. First, Trump entered into negotiations with Iran over its nuclear enrichment, i.e., nuclear weapons development, program, and in the process exhibited every sign of just trying to put off the inevitable until he was out of office; that is, “They can have a bomb once I’m gone.*”

Then, when Trump’s self-imposed 60-day deadline for negotiations passed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swung into action, bombing the hell out of Iran. Iran, of course, launched several barrages of missiles in response, so we now have war in the region.

I wrote yesterday about how a desperate Trump tried over the weekend to enlist Russian President Putin in an attempt to mediate peace, which I guess is The Donald’s version of “Waiting for Godot.”

Now, our president has assumed the mantle of Mr. Chamberlain once again, writing on Truth Social:

“There is peace, at least for now, because of my intervention, and it will stay that way! Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! Many calls and meetings now taking place, I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that’s OK, the PEOPLE understand.”

Yes, I understand completely, Donald Chamberlain.

At least Bibi Netanyahu, in an interview with Fox’s Bret Behr on Sunday, invoked the proper ghost when he quoted Winston Churchill about “the slumber of democracy.”

Wake up, Mr. Trump, and get those bunker busters armed, aimed and on target to finish off Iran’s buried-deep nuclear sites.

*I like the rhyme “They can have a bomb once I’m gone.” Are there any songwriters out there willing to put this to music? It could become this century’s version of “Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire.
