TrumpRx Online Pharmacy Debuts: Are the Prices Really the Lowest Anywhere?

TrumpRX2

The much-ballyhooded Trump 47 online pharmacy — TrumpRx.gov — is open for business, In announcing the site, President Trump promised that the prices would be as low as they go anywhere in the world.

Fortunately, that’s pretty easy to check since Canadian pharmacies are online and robust with products and their prices. I did some comparisons to see if this was just another Trumpian boast, exaggeration, con job, or etc., etc., but more on that shortly. First, before checking prices, I used the new site’s search function to look for meds I take for my heart, specifically Entresto and Eliquis, pretty standard and oft-prescribed drugs for ticker health. They weren’t available.

Okay, so let’s check the prices of some featured meds on the site by going to a Canadian pharma site and checking if the TrumpRx prices are at least as low as our northern neighbor’s.

Say you wish to purchase injectable Wegovy at 0.25mg. TrumpRx offers a pen good for two injections a month with a “teaser” price of $199, but that price is only good through the end of March (fine print). After March 31, 2026, two injections a month of Wegovy in U.S. dollars rise to $349.

In contrast, you can purchase a Wegovy pen, good for four shots a month, at $399 on a Canadian site. Now, if the listed price is in Canadian dollars, you’re only going to pay about 73 percent of that amount if you use U.S. dollars because of our favorable exchange rate.

Another example: Farxiga, which is both a heart and diabetes medication, is listed on TrumpRx at $181.59 for 30 tablets. The Canadian price is $119, and they also offer a cheaper generic version called Dapagliflozin, which is not yet available stateside.

Final thoughts: First, we obviously aren’t getting “the lowest prices anywhere,” as Sir Donald promised. Second, you can only purchase the products at these prices on the Trump site. Your insurance is still stuck paying middlemen and higher prices, though Medicaid did get some discounted prices (not Medicare).

Third, with a name like TrumpRx, does anyone really think a Democrat administration will continue the site with that name, or even eliminate the site altogether? Finally, in a Demofiend administration, will the drug companies suddenly withdraw their offers altogether? (Also, how many will refuse to use the site because the Trump name is attached?)

My suggestion: Talk your primary care provider into writing you a paper prescription and then send it to a Canadian pharmacy. There, you probably will find “the lowest prices anywhere.”
