Social unrest and protests, aka riots, continue to plague France after three weeks. It seems the government can’t keep up with the promises it made to its people, starting with education and stretching to wages and pensions.
More than 500,000 people across the nation took to the streets, with 60,000 in Paris alone. Their demands are for a “dignified wage” and tax reform.
Meanwhile, in Paraguay, the collapse of a bank named Ueno led to the resignation of the nation’s president and a Trump ally, Santiago Peña. The bank is completely insolvent, leaving those with Ueno accounts out of luck.
“I want to apologize to the people if I ever failed you,” said Peña. He now faces impeachment for “dereliction of duty.”
Australia is suffering an economic blow of its own, as a department store chain that has been operating for 188 years is insolvent, with rents unpaid and sales not keeping up with expenses. The David Jones chain has entered administration, which is a form of bankruptcy.
David Jones stores will continue to operate under the control of FTI Consulting, the appointed receivers, while the firm reviews its operations. David Jones operates 38 stores across Australia and New Zealand..
