Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, probably the most consistently conservative of all nine justices, has earned scorn from liberal publications for sticking up for American values such as freedom of speech. The impetus for this opprobrium was a speech that Thomas gave this week at the University of Texas.
The Daily Beast, for instance, called the speech “an unhinged rant” and suggested Thomas’s age, 77, indicates senility. Another website’s headline says he “Thinks He Is Moses.”
Thomas in his remarks lamented the current state of SCOTUS, saying that when he joined, the justices were all WWII vintage and got along well, sharing many values. But that has been lost, he indicated, with the influx of justices without a shared background in struggling to preserve American values such as freedom of speech.
He warned against the influx of progressivism into American society and politics. He said that these influences run counter to the Declaration of Independence that led to the formation of our nation.
“The principles of the Declaration of Independence, as I encountered them, are a way of life,” Thomas said. “They’re not an abstract theory that you only learn in college or law school, but the basic premises of our Constitution and government that you can learn from the people all around you.
“If we don’t stand up and take ownership of our country and take responsibility for it, we are slowly letting others control how we think and what we thinK.”
When Justice Thomas speaks of these progressives, I think of the term I use for them, which is “Demofiend,” referring to members of a once-proud American party that now seeks the socialization and subjugation of Americans for the goal of its own eternal, absolute power.
