In 1939 British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain went to Germany to sign a deal with Adolph Hitler, allowing Germany to annex the largely German-speaking Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia.
The Munich Agreement, in Neville’s mind, spelled “peace for our time.” He proudly told the British people that for the second time in history a prime minister had returned from Germany “bringing peace with honor.”
However, within six months Hitler had sent his forces into the rest of Czechoslovakia to complete his takeover. In September 1939, 12 months after Chamberlain’s misspoken “peace with honor,” World War II was upon Europe and soon the entire world.
Now, admittedly President Trump has not made any “peace” declarations with Iran, whose populace shouts “death to America” en masse every week, but he has indicated he is nearing an agreement to end Iran’s nuclear weapons production.
However, the devil once again is in the details, and the Iranian foreign minister has already announced that his country will continue to enrich uranium no matter what the deal with Trump specifies.
Trump, suddenly consumed by his Great Statesman legacy, seems about to ignore this proclamation and forge a deal with Iran that will delay that country’s production of a nuclear weapon until Trump leaves office.
This, of course, is the same sort of deal Barack Obama signed with Iran and was much criticized for doing so by Trump 45. Trump 47 seems hellbent, however, on getting this deal done.
Now, if Iran is allowed to continue enrichment, it can enrich weapons-grade uranium whenever it likes. Even a RINO like George “Dubya” Bush forced Libya to destroy its centrifuges so it couldn’t enrich weapons-grade uranium. Iran must also be forced to destroy its centrifuges under U.N. or U.S. supervision.
Anything short of that, and we have Munich II delayed until 2029, or even sooner depending on Iran’s ambitions.
Now, I haven’t even applied the Munich analogy to Trump v. Putin in the standoff over Ukraine. Here once again, Trump could sign an agreement that assigns Russia part of Ukraine if the fighting is ended.
Putin, like Hitler, would then have no problem taking the rest of the country six or so months later.
Whatever lightning keg we’re talking about, Iran or Russia/Ukraine, the spectre of Munich looms large.
If we hear Trump talking about peace with Iran or Russia, we’d better pay close attention to the details, and better also have a muscular Plan B on the books if history repeats itself.
