President Trump has hit a new low in approval ratings nationwide at 38 percent*, down from 48 percent when he began his second term. The dramatic slide reflects his loss among voting groups he attracted in 2024: young voters, Hispanics, and independents, or what we call swing voters.
His dramatic slide also reflects voters’ economic woes, especially when it comes to paying for the essentials of living, including food, rent/mortgage, insurance, energy, and just about every product that doesn’t come from China.
Unfortunately, Trump and team — spoiled brats all — don’t get it. They don’t shop at the supermarket weekly. They live off lavish bank accounts or get overpaid in government jobs and don’t have to suffer like the rest of us.
No doubt, Trump in his State of the Union tomorrow night will emphasize just how hunky dory everything is — for the Trumps and cronies, anyway.
He’ll talk about the U.S. being “the hottest nation on earth,” gas prices that are tumbling (maybe the only thing that costs less these days), the numerous peace deals he’s achieved (cough, cough), the price of eggs going down, etc., etc.
And he’ll even try to say that inflation is gone (never has been, never will be) and that prices are now lower than under Biden (a good guffaw on that one).
Yada, yada — voters have heard it all and they ain’t buying it. Voters are also voicing concern about how Trump is handling immigration, what with ICE brutality writ large by Demofiends — a message that voters do seem to be buying.
There’s still time to recover for Trump and the GOP as the midterms loom large, but he’d better get real.
Go out shopping with some suburban moms for a photo opportunity, also to show empathy (and discover that prices really aren’t going down). Gather those health insurance execs in the White House and force them to agree to something beneficial for consumers.
Forget your tariff tirade; tariffs are hugely unpopular, and sorry, Sir Donald, they ain’t doing what you hoped — bringing manufacturing back to America.
There’s still time, but I’m afraid that Trump will continue to hide behind his “hottest nation,” etc., mantra, and display his angry, vengeful side in his tariff crusade.
If so, disaster looms for the GOP in the House, maybe even in the Senate, though that will probably be much harder.
- Okay, you got me. This was just one poll. Real Clear Politics shows a range, with some polls even having Trump at 45 percent. But I still believe, as one of his three-time voters, that he needs to take the steps I’ve recommended. My humble opinion as a dismayed voter.
