Taylor Swift, with her “The Release Party of a Showgirl,” was one of the few winners at the box office in October, while Jennifer Lopez’s musical adaptation “Kiss of the Spider Woman” proved fatal, with just $1.6 million in receipts.
Overall, October came in at $425 million, the lowest since October 1997’s $385 million (unadjusted for inflation).
Disney’s “Tron: Ares” took in $126 million after costing $180 million to produce, not including marketing expenses. A24’s “Smashing Machine,” at $19 million against a $50 million budget, was another spectacular spirit of failure past.
And speaking of spirits, this Halloween weekend, Friday to Sunday, with $49 million in receipts, proved to be the worst weekend of the year.
Holdover titles proved most popular with Paramount’s “Regretting You” and Universal’s scary sequel “Black Phone 2” topping North American charts in October.
Nonetheless, 2025 is topping 2024, due in large part to a 25 percent spike in summer moviegoing, but this year’s increase in receipts is up a scant 2.9 percent overall.
