When the Supreme Court announced November 5 as the date for hearings on President Trump’s tariff usage, the president himself hinted that he might attend.

Well, November 5 is here, and Mr. Trump is not going to be there while the justices hear arguments for and against his use of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act,

“I will not be going to the Court on Wednesday in that I do not want to distract from the importance of this Decision,” Trump wrote on Truth Social prior to today’s hearing. In his place, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be in the audience.

Trump, however, still considers his use of tariffs as essential to the security, economic and otherwise, of the country he leads as president.

Of the Supreme Court’s potential to put an end to his tariff strategy, Trump wrote: “If we lose, our Country could be reduced to almost Third World status — Pray to God that that doesn’t happen!”

Louisiana Senator John Kennedy, an outspoken Republican supporter of the president, said Trump’s attendance would be “a mistake.”

Kennedy said: “Some may interpret it as an attempt to put pressure on the justices, and I think if the justices receive it that way, I’m not saying they will or they won’t, but if they do perceive it that way, I think it will backfire.”
