Eight Senate Dems Join the GOP to Agree on a Revised Continuing Resolution to Reopen the Government

After 40 days of a government shutdown — and facing the prospect of Thanksgiving weekend flights being cut to the bare bones — the U.S. Senate met Sunday night to agree iupn a revised continuing resolution (CR) to reopen the federal government.

Eight Senate Democrats have joined 52 Republicans in a preliminary move to end the filibuster that had blocked the passage of a CR to keep the government running. A formal vote should take place Monday afternoon.

The deal is contingent upon a promise by the GOP to take up health care issues by mid-December.

The CR, once approved, must go to the House of Representatives to be approved since it is different from the one passed earlier along party lines in the junior chamber.

The House has been on recess during the shutdown, and Speaker Mike Johnson has said he would give members 48 hours’ notice to return to work once a deal was reached.

The deal also includes the rehiring of all federal workers cashiered by the Trump Administration during the shutdown.
