Dr. Makary Vows to Bring the FDA — and America’s Medicine — Out of the Dark Ages. Good Luck.
I’ve spent the past five days — and counting — spending most of my time in bed recovering from a case of who knows what. I originally thought it to be food poisoning, but that usually only lasts one night.
Yet here I am in Day Six, and preparing to head back to bed.
That’s why I chose to run an image of men in Black Plague masks to show hor far — actually, how little — we’ve come since the Dark Ages in medicine. Weren’t we similarly decked out during COVID just a couple of years ago (that is, those of us who were not politicians or power brokers?).
Anyway, during my time down and out, I got to watch a lot of TV, and the FDA Commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary, was on a couple of news programs outlining steps he’s taking to bring American medicine into the sunlight. He’s also hoping to get Americans unhooked from unhealthy pre-processed foods.
Given my physical condition right now, all I can say is good luck and keep trying till you win.
