According to a report by news agency Reuters, the much-ballyhooed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been disbanded after eight months.
The agency, originally headed up by Elon Musk, was instituted to cut government waste, fraud and abuse. Musk touted a trillion dollars in savings, but in its eight months of existence, DOGE eliminated at most $250 billion. Now, it is no more, according to a federal agency that should know.
“That doesn’t exist,” Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor told Reuters when asked about DOGE. His office, which is basically a human resources operation, has evidently taken over DOGE’s initiatives.
“The truth is: DOGE may not have centralized leadership…. But, the principles of DOGE remain alive and well: deregulation, eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse, re-shaping the federal workforce, making efficiency a first-class citizen,” Kupor said.
When his term phased out after 130 days under law, Musk exited amiably enough, but in short order, he and President Trump were engaged in a very public feud. The two have recently been seen together, so the celebrated divorce may be in a reconciliation phase.
