Javier Milei, the Trumpista who is head of the Argentine government, survived his party’s reaffirmation vote Sunday and will remain in power.
This is significant because Donald Trump pledged a $20 billion influx into Argentina if voters brought Milei back to office. Now, after Milei’s victory, one can legitimately ask: Did Trump buy the election for his ally in the conservative, free-market movement?
“Today marks the beginning of building a great Argentina,” Milei told gathered supporters in Buenos Aires yesterday after the win.
“This result is nothing more and nothing less than the confirmation of the mandate we assumed in 2023,” he said, pointing to it as proof of voters’ “determination to change the destiny of the nation irreversibly.”
Today, the Argentine stock, bond, and currency markets in Argentina all rallied. (They are also rallying in the U.S. after a reported China-U.S. trade deal.)
Meanwhile, across the Pond in Ireland, voters elected a leftist candidate to be the nation’s 10th president. Catherine Connolly swept to office in a landslide.
