Say Something New, Mr. President. Hint: There Really Is an Affordability Crisis

Trillion

President Trump just finished a prime-time speech that seemed directed at criticism of his administration for failing to lower costs for everyday Americans — what has been labeled an “affordability crisis” by Democrats and others and “a hoax” by Trump himself.

Anyway, as my headline states, the president didn’t say anything new except for one announcement that affects less than 2 million of us — a “Warrior Dividend” check for $1,776 for those serving in the Armed Forces. Nice holiday bonus, indeed.

Otherwise, his 15-minute talk just rehashed what he’s been saying for days, weeks, and months — $18 trillion in foreign investment, gas for two bucks or less a gallon, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, cheaper turkeys for Thanksgiving (really?), less expensive eggs, yada yada. Plus: “America is the hottest nation in the world now. A year ago it was dead” (my paraphrase, but he’s said it a million times).

The only somewhat fresh statement he made was to say that “the best is yet to come.” For Trump and Republicans, he’d better hope so, or there could be upheaval for his party in the 2026 midterm elections.
