The Pentagon announced it will be investigating Senator Mark Kelly (D.-AZ) for his television message to service members to disobey orders they deem illegal.
Kelly, a retired U.S. Navy Captain, can be recalled to active duty and court-martialled if found to have violated military codes and oaths of service.
Kelly appeared with other members of Congress who were former active-duty personnel, as well as with former members of the intelligence community, to urge resistance to orders deemed illegal.
The advertisement gave no direct examples of what the spokespersons deemed illegal.
Presumably, the spokespersons were referring to President Trump’s use of U.S. military personnel in border control and in support of National Guard forces in places like Washington, D.C., where Trump deployed forces to help quell criminal activity and violence — and, of course, to the sinking of suspected drug boats in international waters.
The intelligence community references were probably related to immigration control and investigations. Again, no examples were given of illegal orders to intelligence personnel.
Interestingly, Kelly was among the finalists for the vice-presidential spot on Kamala Harris’s ticket in the run to the White House in 2024.
