The Great Sucking Sound You Hear Coming Out of D.C. Is the Withdrawal of Trump Food Tariffs

That sledgehammer President Trump and cohorts took to tariffs on Independence Day (April 2, 2025) just got put back into the tool chest. On Friday, the Trump administration reversed most food levies in a tacit admission that tariffs are like taxes and can cause inflation, especially in the consumer marketplace.

With Democrat Socialists, aka communists, sweeping into mayoral office in New York City and Seattle in the recent elections, both candidates having run on issues of affordability, the president and his people saw what everyone else saw — trouble for Republicans in coming elections over the cost of living for everyday Americans.

President Trump on Friday issued an executive order pulling back most food tariffs retroactive to 12:01 a.m. Thursday, November 13.

The move is also a strategic legal tactic to show the U.S. Supreme Court, set to rule on Trump’s authority to set tariffs using emergency economic powers, that the tariffs in place target manufactured products competing with U.S. producers.

In an earlier idea floated by Trump, the administration is considering a plan to issue $2,000 tariff rebate checks to taxpayers. The president has also launched an antitrust probe into meatpacking plants as the price of beef continues to skyrocket.

Affordability has proven to be perhaps the number one issue in the Democrats’ anti-Trump political arsenal.

With midterm elections less than a year away, the administration — notwithstanding Trumpian assertions that inflation and prices are falling — clearly sees the handwriting on the political walls of fortune.
